I am a Phoenix, Arizona native, born and raised on dirt track racing! Unlike many children growing up I was fortunate and spent adventurous weekends surrounded by family and friends at one of the many race tracks. Friday at Manzanita, Saturday in Tucson. Holiday weekends were a hot commodity and brought special shows that meant we would spend three nights at sometimes three different tracks. The fall brought a wonderful time of family and friends and I am not talking about Thanksgiving (unless it was Turkey Night!) October brought cooler weather and the Western World Championships, four days of racing that proceeded three days of catching up with old friends, dinners and parties! The buzz created was so strong you could feel and smell it or at least I thought. It turns out it; I related the smell to the freshly tilled earth on a crisp Arizona evening. Ironically it still causes a strong desire for a good race and some old friends! That week was always exciting and I would look forward to getting over to the track to see who had arrived to set up camp in the parking lot for the week. Needless to say concentration on anything other than racing was impossible. To some this life would be hectic and possibly annoying, for me it was invigorating, normal and an experience of a lifetime.
As an adult with my father no longer racing, I had to adjust my perspective to that of a fan or as I prefer connoisseur. The weekend diversity is gone and years later I sometimes still find myself trying to adjust to daily non racing life. I get into my comfort zone watching as much racing as possible every week. Recognizing many of the drivers I was raised with now in NASCAR. Watching racing once you have lived it is very different and gives a new perspective. I miss the hectic schedule and pressure that the impending weekend added to our daily life. Using the weekend as my reward system to get through tougher tasks during the week made me work harder, and smarter, with no time to lose! You can and do compress a lot into a week when you know you have to get to the track on time! You certainly do not want to be the one holding up the train… after all you would never hear the end of it! There were many things I learned and a few that I try to live by; Live each day to the fullest, passionately, Loving all people and never wishing anyone ill will. Remain true to yourself (unique is good) and of course Never Quit because Quitters NEVER Win! A phrase which actually hung on our garage wall for so many years I think the paper finally disintegrated!
